Movie Ticket Reveals ‘Prometheus’ Is Rated R? [Confirmed]

Update: The news has been confirmed. See full update below.

“A King has his reign…” and that reign may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements.

According to an AMC pre-sale ticket stub for the 06/08/12 12:01 AM screening of Prometheus IMAX 3D, the film will be rated R. This information comes from IMDb user dvonnesoneek by way of Collider, who first reported on the rating.

To my surprise, the ticket comes from AMC Concord Mills 24 in Concord, North Carolina. The AMC Concord 24 is 10 miles away from where I’m located in Charlotte, NC – and I’ve visited this theater several times for IMAX and 3D screenings.

I called the theater this morning and spoke with a manager who was able to confirm that tickets for the midnight premiere of Prometheus are available for pre-sale. When I asked what the film was rated, he laughed knowingly and said, “It hasn’t been rated yet” – sounds like the news has already found its way back to Concord.

Here’s the thing: the rating might not mean anything at all. Before theaters like AMC or Regal can sell advance tickets, a rating has to be entered into the system for the upcoming film. If a film hasn’t received a rating from the MPAA, a theater manager might input their own rating.

By putting saying the film is rated R, the theater ensures a “better safe than sorry” scenario. If they listed the film as PG-13, children under 17 could purchase tickets – which could cause quite a problem if the MPAA does officially give Prometheus an R rating.

In any case, Fox has assured is they won’t tinker with the film to receive a better rating. “I can assure the fans absolutely they can take it that the film will not be compromised either way,” said Twentieth Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman last month. “So if that means that the film is R, then it’ll be an R. If it’s PG-13, then it’ll be a PG-13. But it will not be compromised.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Prometheus:

Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Rafe Spall, Sean Harris, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.

Prometheus opens in the U.S. on June 8th, 2012.

UPDATE: Collider has updated their story with confirmation from Fox. Here’s what they found out:

“20th Century Fox has confirmed Prometheus will be rated R for “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.”
