MGM Developing Remake Of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ With Tom Cruise Attached To Star
  |  @   |

Since their near-death experience that put in danger numerous projects including The Hobbit and the newest James Bond flick, Skyfall, MGM has been busy concentrating on their remakes. Movies like RoboCop and Carrie are already well on their way, and now the studio is adding another significant title to the list.

It’s being reported that MGM is developing a remake of the 1960 western classic The Magnificent Seven, with none other than Tom Cruise attached to star in one of the roles.

Cruise has been interested in starring in a remake of the movie for a while now, but this is the very earliest movement of the project. It’s said that the movie is still far from production, and MGM is just starting to peek around for potential writers. No director is involved at the moment.

In the 1960 John Sturges-directed movie, Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen starred as a couple of hired gunmen who help recruit five others (Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz) to defend a small Mexican farming village from a bandit (Eli Wallach) and his forty men who often raid the village and take advantage of its people.

Though the word “remake” usually ignites a general feeling of disgust from movie fans, things are different for The Magnificent Seven. The movie itself is a remake of the 1954 Akira Kurosawa classic, Seven Samurai (also currently in the midst of being remade), and many other movies have drawn inspiration from the basic concept of few fighting against many to defend the helpless. Other movies that have used this premise include Disney*Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, the 1986 comedy Three Amigos, Galaxy Quest, and many others.

What do you think about a new remake of The Magnificent Seven with Tom Cruise starring?

  1. I did enjoy the remake of True Grit, however if Mr.Cruise is playing the Yul Brynner or Steve McQueen role this film will Tank faster than Battlefield Earth. Maybe he could do the Robert Vaughn part but there is nothing he can do to make this project successful other than bowing out completely.

  2. I honestly don’t know how Tom Cruise stays employeed.  He’s bascially a hugely over the hill twink, with no discernable acting ability at all.  Had he been around in 1960, he’d maybe have been qualified to serve lunch to the real actors.  Mabe James Coburn could have used him for knife throwing practice.

  3. Magnificent Seven remake? With the right director, sure! Bring it on. But I don’t think Tom Cruise should be anywhere near it.
