CLiNT Magazine is a unique specimen in today’s comic book industry. Founded by industry veteran Mark Millar, the magazine addresses all kinds of topics, including sneak peaks into upcoming comic books from Millar and others whom the writer believes in.

In this month’s issue – CLiNT Magazine Vol. 2 #1 – we get to see the first chapters in Millar and Leinil Yu‘s upcoming Super Crooks and Millar and Dave Gibbon‘s The Secret Service, as well as non-Millar entries like Roman Dirge‘s Lenore, which celebrates its 20th anniversary; Frankie Boyle and Mike Dowling‘s Rex Royd, a series which Millar picked up for distribution; and finally the CLiNT exclusive comic, Death Sentence by Montynero and Mike Dowling.

Considering that the industry doesn’t really have publications like this anymore, it’s really cool to see a magazine like CLiNT release and showcase comics that many might be unaware of, but the best thing is that you’re getting a whole lot of comic content for just about $7. For each of the five comics, there are also introductions to each non-Millar story which provide features on the comics, or interviews with the creators. So, in that vein, CLiNT is doing something special to help out some lesser-known creators. All of this alone provides a good reason to pick this up. I mean, the magazine is about 100 pages and builds its worth with the massive amount of material inside.

But comics are only a small portion of the magazine – the rest is built around Millar’s next chapter of his Hollywood-bound career. In CLiNT‘s opening interview segment, Millar announces several different topics concerning his movie-making process, including news on Superior, Super Crooks, and the upcoming American Jesus. Personally, I’m not Millar’s biggest fan as many of his comics and film projects seem intentionally edgy to the detriment of the final product, but when Millar announced his intention to tell the story of The Bible‘s Revelations and the returning of Christ in a manor that was modern and delivered in a straight, non-ironic manner, I have to admit that I got pretty interested.

All in all, the magazine is pretty awesome. It’s carved out a niche for itself, and while the Millar overload gets to be a tad much, especially for a non-Millar fan like myself, it’s forgivable considering all of the content within the magazine. And that’s really what it boils down to: value. For the cover price, you get several full comic chapters, so it doesn’t feel like you’re getting handed preview pages or anything; you get information about upcoming movies, exclusive interviews with creators, and features on film and other forms of entertainment. Also, if you subscribe to the magazine, you can get 20% off, as well as a Secret Service art card from Dave Gibbons. So, CLiNT is obviously trying to provide value here, and they succeed. If you’re a Millar fan, you’re probably already reading this from its previous volume, and if you’re not, I have no idea why your not, but if you’re like me and you’ve sort of given up on Millar a while ago, if you can get past the punny title, you may want to give this magazine a read. I enjoyed myself.
