A little over two months ago we announced that Marvel Studios had begun the search for the director of their Captain America sequel set to be released in 2014. Their shortlist was narrowed down to four finalists: F. Gary Gray (The Negotiator), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and Anthony and Joe Russo (You, Me, and Dupree).

Today, Borys Kit at the Hollywood Reporter has announced that Marvel has selected the one who will lead Marvel’s Sentinel of Liberty into big screen battle, or should I say the two? Yes friends, the Russo brothers are in final talks to take the helm of Captain America 2.

Unlike their competition the Russos don’t necessarily have any experience helming the kind of large-scale action a tentpole superhero movie requires a metric ton of to lure in audiences, although they have directed some visually dynamic episodes of the NBC comedy series Community. They’ve also served as executive producers on the show since its first season, but in the wake of the sudden dismissal of series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon it was also announced that the Russos would not be returning to Community next season either, leaving their schedule wide open to take on an ambitious project like the Captain America sequel.

Chris Evans will be returning to swing the shield of the Star Spangled Avenger once more, with Samuel L. Jackson joining him as Nick Fury. The plot of the sequel is being kept under wraps for now but according to screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely it will take place mostly in the present and may feature the Winter Soldier as a possible Cap adversary.

Should all go according to plan Captain America 2 (title subject to change) will open on April 4, 2014.
