If you told me four years ago that a movie like The Avengers would be made, I would have laughed in your face. To create a film based on a team like that would require a lot of time and would need major financing. So instead of just making a straight-up film based on The Avengers, Marvel went forward with focusing on the individuals who make up The Avengers, eventually leading up to the team-up.
Warner tried to go with just with a straight-up film based on the Justice League, but with problems with financing and the writer’s strike, the film was put on hold for a couple of years. Seeing the successful formula that Marvel has created, WB might want to replicate that with Batman entering a reboot phase after The Dark Knight Rises.
But Sony might want to get into that game as well with the Spider-Man universe. The Amazing Spider-Man, the reboot of the film franchise created by Sam Raimi, could possibly try to establish a Venom movie spin off by weaving his character in The Amazing Spider-Man.
According to producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach, there is no reason why these two worlds should not be together and that there will be a way “for the worlds to make sense with one another.”
Here is Arad’s idea about how Venom could play into future Spider-Man films and the long-awaited spin-off film:
It’s an Eddie Brock story. We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock’s story. But again, pseudo-science is becoming science. All these tidbits about webs, artificial webs, is a huge industry now. Spiderwebs have unique qualities that will be huge for communications, fibers, and so forth. So we have taken the approach that we want to make the huge amazing movie about Eddie.
Chronicle director Josh Trank is the the only known person to be in talks to helm the Venom spin-off.
Sony seems to be wanting to make their own Marvel Cinematic Universe. They already have the rights to Ghost Rider as well, so there could be a way for the two to come together. But can they fit? Are there any vital storylines that Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Venom share? If there are any, you can be sure Sony will capitalize on it and make a movie out of it.
Was thinking the exact same thing with “Spirits of Venom” (early 1990s?). Spirits of Vengeance #6 ranks up there as one of my very favorite Venom covers as well!

Why don’t they just weave Spiderman into the Avenegers 2? Surely that would make more sense?

@Dalekbuster523 Sony don’t have rights to The Avengers and it’s characters. DisneyMarvel Studios does, and they don’t like to share.

How long does Sony have the rights to Spidey? Forever? And who has the FF rights at this point?
