New Synopsis For Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Elysium’

Neill Blompkamp

Elysium, Neill Blomkamp‘s follow-up to District 9, has been under development for quite some time. Heavy security stopped anyone from taking photos on the set and prevented us from getting an early look at what the film contains.

Earlier this year, an official photo debuted featuring District 9 star Sharlto Copley in a space suit. We also learned that the film will be set on another planet and combine sociopolitical ideas and action.

Now comes word that an early screening of Elysium was held. But for those (including myself) who could not attend the event, we were treated to an updated synopsis of the film. It pretty much clarifies what sociopolitical ideas we will be seeing in the film. Thanks to Collider providing the new synopsis for Elysium.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

So class warfare seems to be just one of the ideas that will be addressed in the film.

Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Sonia Braga, and Diego Luna also star in Elysium, which is due to hit theaters on March 1, 2013.
