Watch Now: ‘Dredd’ Packs Some Serious Heat In This First Trailer

I hope that mediocre 1995 Judge Dredd movie with Sylvester Stallone hasn’t put off the character forever because the first trailer for Dredd has arrived today. You can watch it here below.

Directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) from a script by novelist and screenwriter Alex Garland (Sunshine), Dredd takes us into a grungier Mega City-One straight out of District 9 and pits futuristic lawman Judge Joe Dredd (Karl Urban) and his mind-reading rookie partner Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) against a gang of cutthroats and scumdogs led by drug baroness Ma-Ma, played by Lena Headey of Game Of Thrones and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

This trailer starts out slowly but strongly and then kicks in with some mighty action towards. I love the lived-in look of this future and the battle-worn uniforms the judges wear in the field. Although Urban seems to be taking a cue from Christian Bale in creating his gritty tough-guy voice, it’s a very minor complaint. I can accept it because, after all, HE IS THE LAW! This sucker looks like nifty fun this Fall. Bring it on.

Dredd will be released theatrically in 3D by Lionsgate on September 21, 2012.

  1. Looks good. Course I was one of the few that liked the first JUDGE DREDD movie.

  2. I still like the first Judge Dredd movie as well! Sure…not as grim and gritty as the comics…but I thought it was a fun adaptation. Even if Judge Dredds costume was a little too “clean”, I think they did a fantastic job bringing the villains to the big screen!

  3. It’s a funny time to be making a movie about a fascist cop isn’t it, I really hope it doesn’t send those kinds of messages out in a supposedly righteous way. I seem to remember something that helped the Dredd comics avoid doing that which was the comedy value thrown into a lot of the stories, they could be so ridiculous at times, but it looks like they’ve done a thorough Nolan style gritty sombre thing with it. Might work :)

I find the concept for the drug SloMo quite funny, it’s certainly a great excuse to use a hell of a lot of SloMo footage, and they fact they were so blazae in naming it that just makes me want to see it more :) I wonder if it’s inspired by any real drug in particular or who came up with that device and why?
Have to agree on the voice thing, it does sound a lot like Bale, but I like Urban a lot so I’ll wait and see it before moaning any more about that now :)

It definitely looks so much better then the 1995 movie which was a massive pile of crap.
