Sony Animation must like what they are seeing with Genndy Tartakovsky‘s Hotel Transylvania (watch the latest trailer here), because they will now reteam for an adaptation of the popular cartoon strip Popeye. According to Variety, the creator of classic Cartoon Network titles such as Dexter’s Labatory, Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack, will make Popeye his second directorial effort.
Variety says that this Popeye will be in 3D (of course it will be). Known for his ability to gain tremendous strength when he consumes a can of spinach, disproportionate arm girth, and possible speech impediment, Popeye has been through countless cartoon incarnations and one live-action movie starting Robin Williams.
Popeye’s supporting cast includes the love of his life Olive Oyl, the infant Swee’Pea, the boorish Bluto, and the inept hamburger-eating Wimpy. There’s also a witch who teams up with Bluto from time to time, and mythical animal named Eugene the Jeep.
Though Taratakovsky has just signed on to become the director of the film, Variety doesn’t mention anything about a cast. Let’s just hope that the cast isn’t as bad as the live-action film led by Williams. And seeing as this particular Popeye will be in an animated form, who would you like to see voice Popeye?
