Charlie Hunnam & Rinko Kikuchi Are Battle Ready In Two New Images From ‘Pacific Rim’

One of the few films that’s not a sequel or based on a recognizable superhero is Guillermo del Toro‘s “giant robots versus giant aliens” film Pacific Rim. Up to today we had only seen a photo of Idris Elba in a military uniform and a Comic-Con exclusive poster. But as we get closer to the movie’s SDCC panel, we are slowly getting more teases.
Two very cool images of Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom) suited up and ready for battle have been released, and you can check them out below.
We have yet to see any of the aliens or robots that will be duking it out against each other. However, there will be more to it than that. Pacific Rim will explore how the real-world would react if a towering, out of this world being was attacking our cities. Would jets and battleships be enough, or would we need more? Of course in this economy, the idea of building giant robots would be insane, but it’s still fun to play around with the idea.
Based on the robot tease we saw in the poster, it will be a very grounded robot that’s not too flashy or crazy. Which is great, because it would add to the real-world feel that del Toro is going for.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
