Finding Nemo

Finding a story to tell for a possible Finding Nemo sequel is quite difficult, but you can bet that Pixar is working on bringing audiences back into Australian waters and reintroducing us to Marlin, Nemo, Dory, Crush, and Bruce.

Deadline reports that Finding Nemo director Andrew Station has found that a story to tell, that the studio loves the idea, and that he’ll be back to direct the sequel. The director is one of the most recognizable people on the Pixar staff, having served as executive producer for a number of Pixar films, as well as the director for Finding Nemo and Wall-E. The former film earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture and is currently Pixar’s second highest grossing movie.

The Pixar team will have plenty of time to flesh out the development of the story as well as do more research as the studio is slated to release four films over the next four years. Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters Inc., will open in theaters next year; Bob Peterson’s The Good Dinosaur will open on May 30, 2014; and Pete Docter’s Untitled Inside The Brain Movie and Lee Unkrich’s Untitled Dia de los Muertos movie will both open in 2015. This means that the earliest we could be seeing Finding Nemo 2 is in 2016.

There is a catch to all of this though. According to the site, Stanton would direct the film if only he got another chance to direct a live-action film. Of course all of this remains unconfirmed by Disney and Pixar. But if the story is as good as the studio says it is, then I am all in for a Finding Nemo sequel.

Don’t forget that Finding Nemo will be re-released in 3D in September of this year.

  1. I’ve always trusted Stanton’s storytelling abilities, so I’m as excited for this sequel as I would be an original Pixar film.  I’m just as pleased that he’s using this sure-to-be hit to negotiate a return to live action since JOHN CARTER, despite Disney’s horrible advertising, was masterfully done.
