‘Catching Fire’ Casting Heats Up: Sam Claflin, Melissa Leo, & Tony Shalhoub All Up For Roles

Casting for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is quite literally heating up. Following the news that Amanda Plummer would be joining the cast of the film as the silent but deadly Wiress, comes news that three major roles have been cast.

It’s being reported that Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman) is in talks to join the cast as Finnick Odair, Melissa Leo (Red State, The Fighter) has been approached to play as Mags, and Tony Shalhoub (Monk, Galaxy Quest) could play Beetee.

We previously reported that Taylor Kitsch, Garret Hedlund, and others were on the shortlist of actors to play as Finnick, but those rumors were quickly quelled by Lionsgate. With the film expected to start shooting in September, we were bound to hear some Finnick casting. Finnick, a former winner of the Hunger Games, is a vital character in the series. The character who is thrown into the gauntlet, joins Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and previous winners of the Hunger Games in the Third Quarter Quell. Claflin already has two fantasy-related roles on his acting resume, so it should be interesting to see if he decides to sign on.

Leo will play as Mags, a mentor to Finnick when he first competed in the Hunger Games. She volunteers to take the place of his lover, Annie Cresta, in order to spare her life. Katniss makes it a point to ally with her because of her selflessness. Leo is a jack of all trades kind of actress, taking on roles of all shapes and sizes.

Beetee, better known as Volts, is also a previous participant of the Hunger Games. The inventor uses electricity as his weapon, hence the nickname. Beetee will also have an important role in Catching Fire. Shalhoub also has a wide range of acting abilities. There’s no doubt he will be able to bring some quirky comedy as well as some serious drama into the picture.

As exciting as these possible castings bits may be, they haven’t been confirmed. But Variety is a very reliable source, so there is no need to question the story.
