Men in Black 3

Earlier today came news that director Marc Webb might not be able to return to make The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for Sony Pictures due to a contractual agreement with Fox.

The news came from Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad, who took part in a lengthy, information-filled interview recently. In addition to the Spider-Man bit, he also shared the studios’ hopes for upcoming projects, including sequels and remakes.

Belgrad shared that they had very high hopes of continuing the Men in Black franchise with Men in Black IV, and that they were making a sequel to 21 Jump Street, as well, claiming that Will Smith and Channing Tatum were two of the very few who could perform in the action, comedy, and romance genres.

Where exactly a fourth MiB movie should go still needs to be worked out before it can be made official, but the plan is to have 21 Jump Street 2 in production by this fall.

The trickiness of doing remakes/reboots was also touched on, with Belgrad explaining that we’re at point where a lot of older movies are be remade to offer them fresh to a new generation, but that those same old movies hold a lot of nostalgia for older movie fans, and so the approach is to do any kind of remake—such as their upcoming new take on Total Recall hopes to be—as uniquely as possible so that it may appeal to both sides.

Another remake he says they hope to do soon, is one of the 1995 fantasy Jumanji, in which a board game magically brings to life whatever you land on, such as a wilderness worth of wild jungle animals, that can only be ended when you finish your game.

Do you have any interest in another Men in Black and 21 Jump Street or a Jumanji remake?

  2. lol. My first reaction was – Don’t remake Jumanji – it’s a naff mediocre movie and premise and nothing good can come of it. The original was bad enough.

  3. Oh great. That’s two more ruined franchises.
Why can’t Hollywood just learn to leave franchises at 3 movies and to never remake films? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
