The Wow! Signal

Back in June we told you about a very cool experiment National Geographic was doing along with the Arecibo Observatory, where they wanted to send your messages via Twitter out to space in response to The Wow! Signal on its 35th anniversary.

As of August 15th, the exact anniversary of first receiving the signal, all messages—including over 20,000 tweets and a few videos from celebrities—were officially beamed out to space for whatever intelligent lifeforms that may be out there to hopefully one day pick up on.

Continue below to check out a cool video (featuring a cameo from yours truly) on how exactly they sent the messages to space.

The Wow! Signal was a mysterious 72-second transmission picked up by SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) three and a half decades ago. It’s never been explained. It’s never been heard again.

The response was sent to Hipparcos 34511, Hipparcos 33277, and Hipparcos 43587, with the last target being home to its own planetary system. Each message has a “repeater header” attached to it that will let any life form that might receive it know that it’s a message from another intelligent life form, and the transmitter used to send them out to space is 20 times more powerful than the most powerful commercial radio transmitter.

In addition to the many thousands of tweets, a small collection of videos from celebrities, writers, and others including Stephen Colbert, Jorge Garcia (Hurley from LOST), Tahmoh Penikett (Helo from Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica), and a very non-celebrity person such as myself were also beamed out to space.

If you want to learn more about the Wow! Signal, the response, or see the full videos recorded by celebrities and others, be sure to head to the NatGeo website.
