After reading Danger Girl G.I. Joe #2, I’d advise you to breathe into a paper bag, put your head between your knees, whatever it is you need to do to catch your breath. This issue, as was the first, is quite a roller coaster ride!

Andy Hartnell has proven himself time and again that he can write Danger Girl. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that he’s the BEST writer of Danger Girl that there ever has been and ever will be. You can imagine my surprise, then, at how well written this issue is, because the Danger Girl team is BARELY IN IT!!! That’s right, it’s 90% G.I. Joe and 200% awesome. The thing that I love about Hartnell’s work here is that he chooses the continuity that EVERYONE knows when it comes to G.I. Joe – the cartoon continuity. And from there he drops Abbey Chase and friends smack dab into the action. VERY well played.

I have to say, as much as I love what IDW is doing with the G.I. Joe franchise, I gaurantee that if you put Hartnell on a G.I. Joe book, they would get TONS of both critical and financial success. Prove me wrong, John Barber!!! Anyway, back to the issue at hand – it is fantastic!!! This is one of the rare crossovers that don’t force things. Abbey Chase isn’t the Baroness. Johnny Barracuda isn’t Flint. They’re all there own characters and they’re fit in where they need to be or where they logically would fit into the story.

John Royle‘s artwork is the PERFECT choice for both G.I. Joe AND Danger Girl. I’ll say for him what I did about Hartnell. Put him on a G.I. Joe book and watch the sales go through the roof! The way he draws G.I. Joe is the way it’s universally remembered and beloved. Aside from that, it’s just great art. TONS of energy, and his designs of the Cobra bases and tech is beyond awesome. STUNNING artwork here, folks.

You’ll be getting out your toys and spending the afternoon playing with them after reading this issue, I guarantee you. THIS is the G.I. Joe book that we’ve always wanted to read…along with some Danger Girl thrown in for good measure. THIS is the creative team that NEEDS a monthly G.I. Joe title. PICK. THIS. UP. NOW!!!
