‘Videodrome’ Remake To Be Helmed By Commercial Director Adam Berg

Videodrome

Many classic films have been the subject of a reboot or a remake, and often times the reaction to the news of one is less than positive. Take the remake of David Cronenberg‘s Videodrome for example. Not only is it an unnecessary remake, but it’s being scripted by Ehren Kruger, the screenplay writer for the last two Transformers movies. Just by knowing who is attached to write the script for the remake alone tells you that it will almost certainly be not anywhere near the same level as the Cronenberg original.

Adam Berg joins a long line of commercial directors making the leap into feature films by making his directorial debut with the Videodrome remake. Deadline reports that it was one of Berg’s commercials that inspired Universal to make him their top choice.

Judge for yourself and see if he is worthy of directing the remake by watching the commercial below.

Cronenberg’s original film explored the harsh realities of television and mind-controlling technology. It starred James Woods as a down-and-out head of a cable TV network who decides that to increase his network’s ratings he needs to add more edgy programming. He uses Videodrome, a show which depicts grotesque acts of torture, violence, and murder, and gets the ratings he wants, but learns that there is a price to pay to run the show.

The film is a cult hit so it has its audience, but to give it a modern edge may be unnecessary. This reboot would be formed into a sci-fi action thriller, which is something that wouldn’t make fans of the original or Cronenberg himself happy at all.

That being said, I want to take a look at what Berg and Kruger has to offer. No word yet on who will star in the reboot or when it will be released.

What are your thoughts?

  1. This is a bad, bad, bad, BAD idea. The idea of remaking “Videodrome”, a twisted masterpiece that was prescient in many ways of our modern media is near-blasphemous. Still it serves David Cronenberg right for his arrogant and snobby comments on “The Dark Knight Rises” and comic books in general.

  2. At least you realize this is a bad idea. Funny how a place for people’s opinions gives people crap for giving theirs.
