Director Jose Padilha Reportedly Miserable With Studio Over ‘Robocop’ Remake

RoboCop Remake

Hugh Laurie taking a pass on the villain role in Jose Padilha‘s Robocop may have been a sign of things to come. Apparently things aren’t looking good for the upcoming remake, and filming hasn’t even started yet. The rift is between Padilha and MGM. Studio heads and directors butting heads isn’t anything new really. But things have gotten so bad that Padilha talked about his problems to his colleague and Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles about the developmental problems that are occurring before production begins next September.

ScreenCrush found a translated interview made by Cinemacom Rapadura. According to the report, the studio is getting in the way of Padilha’s vision for the film. Not so surprising since a studio gives their input on what they would like to see in a film that they will fund and distribute. But things are so bad between Padilha and MGM that Padilha can’t even get around to putting his ideas in the film.

Here’s the exact quote:

I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight. “This is hell here,” he told me. “The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.” He is bitter, but it’s a fighter.

Remember this isn’t coming from Padilha himself, so the aforementioned quote by may be a bit exaggerated since Meirelles isn’t making the movie. Then there is the lost in translation factor. So all of this could just be a misunderstanding.

But if this is true, it’s hard to see Padhila leaving as director since we are already seeing a bit of his work in a viral marketing campaign for OmniCorps’ latest tech. We’ll see if things continue to be as turbulent in the weeks leading up to filming.

  1. Looks like MGM have not learned from the experience of nearly going bankrupt. Good riddance for the next time it happens, and it will for real this time.
