WB Decides To Convert Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ Into 3D
  |  @   |

3D has a nasty reputation for being one of the biggest movie gimmicks ever. Some people may have an appreciation for the eye-popping presentation, but for others, it induces unimaginable headaches and sore eyes. So imagine the disappointment some people going to feel to hearing that Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, which was originally set for only a 2D release, will be converted into 3D.

Variety reports that Del Toro had no say in this and that the decision to convert the film into 3D was made by Warner Bros. Let’s face it, it was only a matter of time before we heard this was going to happen to Pacific Rim. 3D premiums have been giving movies that use the presentation a huge chunk of change for studios. The trouble is that most theaters have no idea how to adjust the lighting for 3D showings, hence the enormous headaches and blurred vision after each showing.

Technically, Pacific Rim will be Del Toro’s first film in 3D. I wonder how much of a factor the director’s lack of knowledge of the medium will play out for the finale 3D cut. No doubt WB will be giving the director some of the top people in the 3D conversion business to help make this film truly eye-popping. Still, that cannot convince me to watch this film in 3D.

What are your thoughts on the conversion?

  1. Bad but completely by the numbers decison by the suits. They think 3D is the savior they’ve been praying for. The Hollywood way is to run anything into the ground and then jump on it’s corpse a few times for good measure before looking for the next big thing. I’ll be watching in 2D and saving my money thank you very much! Guillermo del Toro deserves much better. First Mountains of Madness now this? I’m disgusted at the way they treat this man.

  2. Definitely a NO-NO! Each time they try to turn a movie into 3D, they mostly change the style, and most of the time it ends up turning more of an “eye-cruncher” than the intended “eye-popper” effect. del Toro should get the leeway his movies deserves. Way to go Warner for sticking your nose in into another as of yet stunning colossal movie to come our way.
