RoboCop: First Look at Kinnaman

Thanks to our friends at ComingSoon.net, the film enthusiast community has their first look at Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the new RoboCop suit! Director Jose Padilha‘s remake of RoboCop began filming today in Toronto, where Kinnaman was spotted in costume. Check out the photos here below.

Recently, a draft of the screenplay by Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk was leaked onto the Internet, which revealed that there would be numerous versions of RoboCop as OmniCorp refined their design, so while I doubt this will be the only RoboCop suit you see Kinnaman in; I think this is probably the final, combat-ready design.

The design of the suit is obviously influenced by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as Iron Man and Michael Bay’s Transformers series with a hint of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Guyver (yes, the 1991 Mark Hamill vehicle) thrown in for good measure.

Rob Bottin’s original design for Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 RoboCop was a work of simple, practical elegance. RoboCop was very much a product of Detroit’s automotive industry – a bulky metal frame with an icy blue paint job. This version of RoboCop has a sleek, matte black style that looks more like kevlar body armor than Detroit steel. If you look closely, you can see the outline of RoboCop’s signature visor underneath the larger flip-up shield – similar to the human skull under the Xenomorph’s carapace in Alien.

I’ll be honest, while this new design isn’t nearly as iconic at Rob Bottin’s, it certainly is appealing to the eye, even if it does feel rather derivative. At this point, I’m more concerned with the script, which was recently reviewed by Latino Review’s Da7e. Hopefully the script Da7e and others have read is woefully outdated and has been replaced altogether by a screenplay that is somewhat bearable.

RoboCop co-stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, and Jay Baruchel. The film, which is produced by Marc Abraham, Eric Newman, and Bill Carraro, will hit theaters on August 9, 2013.

  1. Not feeling it – Robocop had his own unique design not a cookie cutter iron man uniform. Think: FORD, GM, Chrysler blue collar city

  2. How is this matte black suit that looks more like Batman than anything else more appealing than the iconic RoboCop suit. This looks like more of the same schlock that started out with the Original X-men movie where everyone wore a black leather jumpsuit.

  3. You mean 2013…
This to me looking like a giant piece of generic shit. It’s RoboCop remade it’s sad to me that the production couldn’t come up with a cool way to make a Cop/Cyborg look modern and not stupid and like generic body armor.

    Go Hollywood!

  4. Maybe it’s that mat color, so it’s easier for the animators to add the details they want after the fact along with being easier to film without other issues, like movement being encumbered?

  5. What a shitty suit design!
Oh well, I think its for the best anyway.
Nothing will beat the original, thats how I think of it.

  6. I saw the new Robocop today. It was awesome. I highly recommend it. Officer Alex Murphy is 1st in a silver robot suit in the beginning but then he is given the black suit later. The black suit is way cooler & looks better. Also, Joel Kinnaman (lead actor playing officer Murphy) is HOT!!!

  7. Joel looks and sounds like actor Brian Thompson, Possibly his son as the age difference, especially after Altered Carbon. 5 thumbs up by the way. And yeah its tough to beat the original Robocop. any way.
