Obsidian Entertainment’s Next Project Revealed As ‘Project Eternity’

Obsidian's Project Eternity Image

Early last week it was discovered that Obsidian Entertainment was teasing their next video game project after the South Park RPG Stick of Truth.

The tease turned into a countdown, and as everyone waited to see what it was, many speculated what it might be. Popular possibilities were Fallout 4, Dungeon Siege IV, and a Wheel of Time game…but, as it turned out, it was none of those.

Obsidian revealed their next game to be something being called Project Eternity, which they were to fund using the popular crowd funding website, Kickstarter.

Project Eternity is just a working title, but the game is to be an old school classic-style RPG in the same vein as games like Obsidian’s Baldur’s Gate. Here’s a full description of it:

Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system – positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. “¦and you’ll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.

We are excited at this chance to create something new, yet reminiscent of those great games and we want you to be a part of it as well.

After all the games that were speculated, and as someone who’s not an old school RPG player, I’d be lying if I said that “wah wah wah” sound didn’t play in my head.

But the gamers that are into these games are clearly excited for it, as it took just a couple of days to reach its $1.1 million goal. The goal was reached so quickly that Obsidian has now added a bunch of extended goals that include extra races and classes, and expanding their platforms to include Mac and Linux, which does not exist yet (at the moment the game is only being made for Windows PC).

If you’d like to help reach these extra goals, you can head to the Kickstarter page for all the dirty details, and you can head to Obsidian’s Project Eternity page for more information on the game.
