‘Amazing Spider-Man’ To End In December With Issue #700
  |  @   |

Marvel has been announcing the cancellation and relaunch many of their titles over the last few months as part of their Marvel NOW! initiative and we learned this week which title will next see a relaunch — Amazing Spider-Man.

Marvel’s solicitations for December of 2012 revealed that Amazing Spider-Man #700 will be the series’ last issue. Now, I say final issue with the largest possible air quotes I can, as we know that the series will be back in either January or February with a (possible) new creative team and a (possible) new release schedule. My guess is that Marvel will bring an end to the era of Amazing Spider-Man being released every two weeks, barring months where they ship multiple issues (which Marvel loves to do with their other titles).

Check out the full cover for Amazing Spider-Man #700 here below.

Amazing Spider-Man #700 will be an over-sized issue, coming in at 104 pages, and will feature the requisite variant covers. I’m assuming here that the issue will be the end of writer Dan Slott‘s run on the series, which started on issue #648. Slott’s run has been a bit hit or miss for some readers, but has had numerous exciting stories, such as “Spider Island” and “Ends of the Earth.”

Amazing Spider-Man has been one of Marvel’s best series since its last relaunch in 2008, when it was being released three times a month with a rotating cast of writers. Since then, the title has remained solid, but is not as high profile as it once was, being eclipsed by the X-Men and the Avengers. It makes sense for Marvel to bring some new blood onto the title and create some buzz around it.

It will be interesting to see who Marvel brings in to take over the series (again, assuming that Dan Slott will not be back when it is relaunched, which has been neither confirmed nor denied). There must be any number of writers waiting to take their shot at the book, and as Amazing Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s titles, it’s a safe bet they have a big name lined up to take over the title. We’ll have to see what the company has lined up for the future of the series as more details emerge.
