Anne Hathaway Cast As Female Lead In Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’

Steven Spielberg has an idea on whom he would like to see take the two lead roles in his long-gestating adaptation of Robopocalypse. It’s been reported that Spielberg would like to see Chris Hemsworth play the male lead in the upcoming film and now there is word that Spielberg is looking to Anne Hathaway to play the female lead. In addition to these possible castings, there is confirmation that former 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Tom Rothman will be a producer for Robopocalypse.

According to Deadline, the studio is tightlipped about any news concerning the casting of lead roles in Robopocalypse. But the fact that Hathaway and Hemsworth could share the silver screen is an exciting thought. We will be likely to hear confirmation of the two being cast in the weeks leading up to the start of principle photography, which is scheduled to begin early 2013.

For those who may not be familiar with Daniel H. Wilson‘s sci-fi novel, Robopocalypse centers on the survival of the human race after a massive robotic uprising occurs, when a program becomes fully sentient. Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay.

Spielberg spoke highly of Rothman’s reputation in a press release announcing the producer’s hiring:

“When someone like Tom is a free agent, you snatch him up fast. He has proven himself to be a necessity of this industry. At Fox he had already been an enthusiastic partner on “˜Robopocalypse,’ and it is to our advantage that he would come produce this film with me. Tom has been a wonderful friend and colleague over the years and DreamWorks is incredibly lucky to have him on board.”

Rothman had this to say about becoming a producer for a Spielberg project.

“If you are in politics, you dream of a call from the White House, in baseball, from the Yankees, in movies, from Steven Spielberg. “˜Robopocalypse’ is the kind of important epic entertainment, a big movie with big ideas, that Steven does better than anyfilmmaker on earth. I am honored beyond measure that he asked for my help on it and fired up to do whatever I can for him, Stacey, the outstanding DreamWorks team, and all of my friends at Fox. I enjoyed the idea of being unemployed for a week, but this will be way more fun.”

You can read the full press release on Deadline.

Disney will be handling the domestic distribution through their Touchtone Pictures banner, and Fox will taking care of the international distribution. Robopocalypse is scheduled to hit theaters on April 25, 2014.
