The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has made an interesting decision regarding who will host the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony on February 24, 2013.

It’s been officially announced that none other than Seth MacFarlane, the creator of hit animated series like Family Guy and American Dad!, has been chosen for the job. MacFarlane also recently made his live-action feature directorial debut with the hit talking teddy bear comedy, Ted, which went on to gross $420 million worldwide, and hosted the recent season premiere of Saturday Night Live.

Of the announcement, MacFarlane had this to say:

Many might think MacFarlane is a strange choice as Oscar host, but, whether you’re a fan of his shows or not, you can’t deny how talented the man is. In addition to having a trio of popular animated series, in which he provides many of the characters’ voices, and one of the top R-rated comedies of all-time, MacFarlane also has a tremendous singing voice—to the point where he even released a legit crooner album—and has done some more serious vocal work like the role of Johann in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Anyone who’s watched a few episodes of Family Guy likely has noticed that MacFarlane is also a big fan of musicals, which will very likely play greatly into his Oscar hosting gig.
