GoD List Banner

Each and every week “Alone Again, Naturally” Henchman21 reads a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. He looks forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of his pull lists, grab some comics, and he’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 3rd, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It’s kind of a slow week dominated by a couple of big books from both of the major publishers. There’s plenty to get excited about though, and plenty of books to check out. Beyond the books I list below, I would recommend Daredevil: End of Days #1 (especially if you were a fan of Brian Bendis’ Daredevil run). You should also definitely pick up the Criminal Deluxe Edition Hardcover, Vol 2.

Let’s see what books I went more depth into on this week’s GoD List!

Avengers Vs X-Men 12

Issues:

Avengers Vs. X-Men #12 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Well, we’ve come to the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men. Has it been a good ride? For the most part, I’m willing to say yes. The series has moved at a pretty good pace, there have been some good moments, and I’ve gotten my money’s worth. There have been some missteps along the way for sure. The last issue had some confusing moments, and a big death that lacked any dramatic flair. I have faith that this last issue will deliver though, and that reason lies in two words: Jason Aaron. I have not hidden the fact that Aaron is my current favorite writer, and with him as the writer of this final issue, I think this will be one Marvel event that ends with more of a bang than a whimper. He’s joined by Adam Kubert on art for this last issue, which ensures that it will look pretty good as well. Do you think Jean Grey will make an appearance in the end? Will there be one more throw down between Cyclops and Wolverine? What kind of surprise are we in for at the end? Make sure you check this out to find out what the future of the Marvel universe will look like.

Animal Man #13/Swamp Thing #13 (DC Comics – $2.99) Hooray for Earth! DC’s Zero month is over, and we can get back to the regular stories already in progress. And the biggest story at DC right now is Rotworld, the crossover between Swamp Thing and Animal Man (with an assist from Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.). Writers Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire have been building towards this crossover since both series started, so it’s nice to see some resolution to the long running plot threads. The forces of The Green, The Red, and The Rot are marshaled against each other, and the Rot seems to have a head start. Now it’s up to Animal Man and Swamp Thing to erase the damage that has been done and to save their friends and family. There’s a reason these two series have been some of the most successful and acclaimed of DC’s New 52. Snyder and Lemire are producing great work and this is going to be a fun, epic story.

Doctor Who, Vol. 3 #1 (IDW Publishing – $3.99) Now, I know all you Doctor Who fans are in mourning because you don’t get any new episodes till Christmas and there was a whole lot of sadness in the last episode. Well, buck up! You’ve got a new comic series to tide you over the break and there is some quality talent behind this series. Andy Diggle takes over writing for the series, and as a Brit, he is ideal to take over. Doctor Who is a quintessentially British property, and it should always be written by a Brit whenever possible. Diggle also happens to be a good writer, having written books such as The Losers, Green Arrow: Year One and many, many others. He’s not the only top name on the book, what with the art being handled by Mark Buckingham (Fables). So, you’ve got a great writer and artist, a very popular property, and a good place to jump on. All the Whos in Whoville should be on the lookout for this one.

Trades:

The Walking Dead Compendium, Vol. 2 (Image Comics – $59.99) I feel like this collection of The Walking Dead issues 49-96 should come with some kind of warning saying that you should not read more than a few issues in a single sitting. Because 48 issues of pure Walking Dead depression is probably too much for anyone. That said, there’s a reason The Walking Dead is still popular after all this time, and it’s because it’s a pretty good series. Robert Kirkman has created a gripping series of life during the zombie apocalypse. He has assembled a cast of characters that readers have come to love and hate and fear, and he has found a way to keep the series fresh. Just as soon as you get used to one status quo, Kirkman finds a way to put the characters back into harm’s way, or has some horrible tragedy occur. This feels like a collection created for Walking Dead fanatics, as I can’t imagine casual fans picking up this version of the story, but if you want to reread a whole bunch of issues before the third season of the Walking Dead TV show, this will be the collection for you.
