Guillermo Del Toro Confirms He’s Still Working On ‘Frankenstein’ For Universal
  |  @   |

When it was announced that Universal was planning to reboot The Mummy again, the consensus was that they shouldn’t do it. It being too soon was one of the main reasons why the studio should hold off on rebooting the classic monster. But Universal has been on the retooling the stars of their creature features for a while. Sure The Wolfman didn’t work out like they would have hoped it would, but The Mummy was so successful, why not reboot it?

But if there is one monster story that deserves to get a modern day retelling, it’s Frankenstein. Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro has been attached to this long-gestating project. The lack of development from the studio made it seem like they weren’t interested in the project. But in a recent interview, del Toro reveals that he has in fact been given the green light to rewrite the script.

It’s so much better to get the word straight from the man behind the film rather than have to get it from a source that is reporting unconfirmed information. Del Toro had this to say about getting the greenlight to write the script,

[Universal Pictures Co-Chairman] Donna Langley just put us on track to write the screenplay. So, we’re going to start writing the script. It’s a very long endeavor for me; it’s going to require a couple of years just to write it. But it’s been put back on track by Donna.

Unlike the James Whale Frankenstein, which was released in 1931, del Toro’s will be faithful to the classic Victorian novel written by Mary Shelley. He reiterates that it will be the most personal film that he has ever made and talks about the profound connection he has with the misunderstood monster.

I’m being very faithful in that I’m trying to capture the spirit of the novel, when I read it as a kid, and how it impacted me. I recognize that it’s both biography and prophecy about my life. It’s a very personal film. In many ways it’s the most personal film I’ll ever make, because my connection with the creature is very profound and deep and I don’t think there’s any other monster that has affected me as much.

Hearing that it will take a couple of years to write it can be a bit disconcerting, but a lot of that has to do with him getting the story right, rather than him meeting some sort of deadline so that a studio can push a tentpole film. Based on the aforementioned quotes, it looks like del Toro will be getting to work on Frankenstein as soon as he finishes his press rounds for Pacific Rim.
