‘Iron Man 3’ Co-Writer Drew Pearce Will Rewrite ‘Godzilla’
  |  @   |

Everyone was surprised to see that Warner Bros. presented a sizzle reel for Gareth EdwardsGodzilla during San Diego Comic-Con in July. At that time film was still very much under early development. Screenwriters David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy), and Max Borenstein all contributed to the script, which the studio reportedly likes. Now Variety reports that Drew Pearce will be brought in to do the rewrites for Godzilla.

According to the report, Pearce’s writing will “age up” the characters in the script. Now the question is, how young were the characters originally? How much older will they be now that Pearce is writing it? If these characters were kids, it would certainly be an interesting aspect of a story, but it would also be difficult to market to an older audience.

A studio bringing in new writers to rewrite a script is almost an everyday practice within the industry. The fact that WB is bringing in such a talented writer just to age up some of the characters tells us that they like what the original drafters have written. Other than that little bit of info, and footage we saw at Comic-Con earlier this year, not much is known about Godzilla.

Godzilla will open in theaters May 16th, 2014.

  1. Here’s an idea. Make a really good movie and no one will really care how old the characters are. Perhaps they should have aged up Harry Potter. Or aged down Gandalf. Kirk? Imagine the Twilight fans he’d have attracted if he was 19. Or the aging Titanic fans they could have drawn if Spock was, like, 80.

Brilliant, eh? Maybe I should move to Los Angeles and make movies like everyone else with a brilliant idea.
