We first heard of Universal Pictures’ plans to remake Scarfacelast September, it was reported that David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch) had been hired to write the script for the remake.
Now comes word that the talents of Paul Attanasio have been enlisted to rewrite Ayer’s script.
Attanasio has been selective about his writing projects, with only a few movies and some TV shows to his credit. Movies he’s written include Quiz Show, Donnie Brasco, Sphere, The Sum of All Fears, and The Good German. He was also an executive producer on the hit TV series House.
With this new Scarface, the word “remake” is being used lightly. The plan is to take the common themes of the original 1932 movie and the 1983 remake that starred Al Pacino—someone coming from nothing and rising to a position of great power through ruthless and violent methods—and use them to tell a new and unique story…like they did with the 1983 remake that starred Al Pacino.
Considering that one such remake of Scarface has already been made to great, long-term success, are you open to this new planned version?
