In 2009, Disney shocked the world by purchasing Marvel Comics. While many were worried that the comic property would be Disneyfied, in the years that the Mouse House has owned it, nothing has really changed. Now Disney is making yet another large acquisition that no one could have ever seen coming.

Disney has bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion. This is the biggest thing to happen to the studio since Alan Horn took over the motion picture department. But this also means that there will be some corporate restructuring for Lucasfilm. According to THR, current co-chair Kathleen Kennedy will be demoted to president of the studio. However she will serve as the executive producer of the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode VII, which is scheduled to be released some time in 2015. There are also plans to release a Star Wars film once every two years. George Lucas will continue to stay in the loop as he will be the creative consultant to Episode VII.

Here is Lucas commenting on the brand new deal that was inked with Disney:

Disney’s handling of the Marvel Studios’ properties should be a clear indication that they will not meddle with the affairs of certain properties by Disneyfying them. Though we may not know what we will see in Episode VII, there is still a lot about this deal we do not know about. For instance, 20th Century Fox, which has been distributing the Star Wars film, had plans to re-release the installments in 3D for the next few years. How this deal affects those plans are unknown. There is also the issue with the animated Clone Wars series which is housed at Cartoon Network. We also do not know who will direct Episode VII, but seeing that the film is coming two years from now, I’m sure Disney is already making a few calls to some high-profiled directors.
