$5 MP3 Album Deal: Steely Dan ‘Aja’

Steely Dan

Aja, the consummate release from the jazz/rock/quirky genre stretching group Steely Dan, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.00.

By the time the album was originally released in 1977, Steely Dan had been already around for a handful of years, hits and successful albums under their belt (“Do It Again,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Dirty Work,” etc.) and it all crystallized with the release of Aja.

Going full out with production, arrangements, usage of famed session players, and the trademark of the band, cryptic sarcastic lyrics dipped in poison ink, the sneering vocals of Donald Fagen and the reliable and creative fretwork of Walter Becker, Aja puts it all together in one great slice of music with roots in rock and roll for the most part, but also window dressed with some jazz rock, fusion, blues and moods which shift tonal colors like traffic lights. The tour-de-force proceedings have such memorable songs as “Black Cow,” “Deacon Blues” and the funky “Peg,” but the heavyweights here are “Home At Last” in which drummer Bernard Purdie keeps it air tight but loose with his “Purdie Shuffle” beat and the title track, which finds the band scaling sonic mountains with people like Wayne Shorter on Sax and groovemeister Steve Gadd on drums. That track and the album itself, stand as a high tide achievement in the bands varied catalog and remains requisite listening for all.
