Rumor For Your Thoughts: Will Darth Vader Return From The Dead In ‘Star Wars Episode 7’?
  |  @   |

Fans of George Lucas’s original Star Wars trilogy have seemed to remain cautiously optimistic (while quietly terrified) about Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and their plans to make the trilogy they thought would never ever happen just a couple of weeks ago.

This cautious optimism likely stems from Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and the movies that have been released since, including The Avengers, which has given them just enough hope that Star Wars Episode VII can bring the franchise back from that darkest and most depressing of places that Lucas’s prequel trilogy delivered it to. Bring it back from the dead.

Speaking of bringing things back from the dead, a new rumor has surfaced that Disney may be pondering bringing a one Mr. Darth Vader, who *Spoiler Alert* perished at the end of Return of the Jedi, back for the new trilogy.

This is to be taken with an ocean’s worth of salt, as it comes from the British tabloid Express. According to a “film mole,” Vader is just too important not to be part of the plan.

The source said:

“He’s an integral part of the franchise. Replacing him is virtually impossible. The plan is for him to return and play a significant role in the new films.”

Now…this is almost certainly going to end up being complete and utter B.S. when it’s all said and done. But there is one teeny tiny (but also incredibly large) reason the rumor isn’t completely ignorable: MONEY. Darth Vader is…well, he’s freakin’ Darth Vader. He’s the primary antagonist of the first trilogy, an integral part of the prequel trilogy, and perhaps the most iconic character from not only these movies but movies in general. If Disney thinks they have a way to bring him back into the fold (as the film mole says: “This is science fiction remember. Darth Vader will rise from the ashes.”), which would allow them to go all-out in the marketing department, they might just be too tempted to not do it.

On the other end of the spectrum, Vader was created after Anakin Skywalker was basically dead (or mostly dead, if you asked Miracle Max). To do that a second time with the same character would feel repetitive and unnecessary. Plus, Star Wars fans everywhere would probably blow a gasket if the rumor turned out to be true. That cautious optimism? It’s there because Disney seems to be handling Marvel properties with care, but it’s fueled by a hope that Star Wars Episode VII and its sequels will be fresh and original additions to the franchise and not a reunion of aging characters from the originals in hopes of making lots of money.

Which brings us to the reason we even bothered writing about this rumor. If there is even the slightest chance Disney is pondering such a thing, you the fans will likely sway it one way or the other using this wonderful tool called the internet.

Would you be okay with Darth Vader returning for the new Star Wars trilogy if they came up with an acceptable enough way to explain it? Or is the very mention of it unspeakable?

  1. The very idea of bringing Darth Vader back is absolutely unthinkable. Not to mention stupid.

  2. Disney’s no better than Lucas if they stoop to this level of stupidity.

  3. A strong theme in the prequels (wether you liked them or not) was Palpatine seducing Anakin with the idea that you could cheat death and that together they could find a way. Well, it would fit in with continuity if they found a way and if one or both of them came back as clones or the essence shifting. The only problem is that Vader would have to come back as a good guy against a clone Emporer because Luke had already redeemed him. So, there would be no point to episodes 4, 5, and 6 if you have Vader fall to the dark side again. Wow, I really hope they don’t do a Terminator 2 and make Vader a good guy lol.

  5. Won’t happen. This is just a rumor to get the fanboys stirred up.

  6. They should leave him dead. There should be no “clone” or
look alikes either. What they SHOULD do, would have some sort of occasional
flashbacks or memories of the past by some episode-7 character or characters,
when he is hunting down Jedi (like “Force Unleashed” games. Him killing people
was pretty awesome). That way, the story can go on, and move on, without
bringing back some “fake” Vadar. But it also keeps him in the the movie and
brings the sales. By the way, that would be awesome to see Vadar killing some
Jedi like the “Force Unleashed” games. Probably would need to make it PG-13,
just like episode-3 or “Pirates”. Just please don’t re-insert him as a new
“recycled” charactrer as above mentioned. :/

  7. That way, Disney could retain the original “Fan Boys”,
whilst driving high Vadar sales and obsorbing many more into the fan-base
(younger crowd?). I think Disney should also attempt to try to at least somehow
partly incorporate the “New Jedi Order” books written to take place after
    episode-6. Maybe a little even, wouldn’t hurt.

  8. i think it would be ok for vader to comeback as a force ghost, maybe in a teaching role for new jedi, but beyond that? i’d say that there should not be a physical appearance

  10. They would have to bring him back to life, and, if you recall he was good at the end of Jedi, they’d have to make him completely evil again. The idea is ludicrous, and they should never do this. It would ruin the franchise worse than episodes 1-3 and hearing rumors like me discredits all the hope I had based on Disney’s ownership of Marvel Studios. If they bring Vader back I will not see the movies… but, sadly, I’m sure a lot of people still will and it will still make money.

  11. The very thought of this chills my bones

  12. Vader is dead, Anakin is dead. Reviving either? Very foolish this idea is. The only feasible way to introduce him would be as Anakin’s force ghost and doing that is in the face of Star Wars canon. Somehow an evil ghost would be ludicrous and a physical return of Darth Vader would be downright stupid. This rumour probably will amount to nothing in the end though.

  13. I don’t even like the idea that the original cast for Luke, Han, and Leia are coming back as it’s already killing the possibility of fresh look into the franchise. So, bringing Vader as much as I love him as a character… http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

  14. If they don’t bring back Darth Vader, it completely throws off the Star Wars Rebels series. In the third episode of season 2 of Star Wars Rebels, a man who looks exactly like Darth Vader shows up. He has a relatively deep voice and when you’re around him you can literally feel the anger and the hatred. He even survives being crushed and nearly catches the main characters of the series numerous times. This character is unmistakably Darth Vader, they don’t say his name, but it’s obvious. Looks and sounds like him. The evil sense you get near him. He’s strong as him. Ezra mentions how he is a sith lord, and the mysterious sith lord even says when Ahsoka realizes: “The apprentice lives.” If Darth Vader really does die, then Star Wars Rebels is pretty much ruined and makes absolutely no sense whatever. I think they should have Darth Vader come back. In Star Wars Rebels, he reports to a hologram that is his master. His master gives him orders to carry out, maybe we should have him destroy a whole bunch of stuff and kill loads of people in Star Wars. Think about it, first have Darth Vader kill main characters in Episode VII, then have him unleash his sith overlord with maybe a crystal of some sort. Here’s an idea:
    – The sith overlord ordered Darth Vader to kill Luke and take his Kaiburr crystal. Put those two Kaiburr crystals of the Skywalker family (Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker) in this shrine. Then he has to retrieve this mystical orb, but he needs a corpse of one of his family members to sacrifice (Luke). He puts the orb in the shrine, but has no idea what he’s in for. In Episode VIII it carries off in the same place. The beast rises from the depths of Hell. The ground ripping open and then he comes out. This 250 foot monster. He looks like a man, but a light shade of black. He has two black horns and all sharp teeth. The only clothing he is wearing is a brown torn up skirt. He resembles some kind of bull or minotaur maybe, but his face: Emperor Palpatine. The Palpatine beast causes chaos throughout the entire movie and Darth Vader is a bit scared, but loves the chaos and destruction. Palpatine Beast, towards the end of the movie tells Darth Vader he is no longer needed. He tries to step on him, but then Darth Vader manages to get away.Darth Vader is then enraged and filled with hatred. No one defeats Darth Vader. He finds out there is a button to destroy the Palpatine Beast. He finds the button, presses it and looks out the window. He sees it all. Palpatine Beast falls to his knees and starts getting this red/orange light around him. He starts bursting into fire and lava. He collapses into pieces and the lava and rock that is left of him turns to ashes and blows away forever, or so they think. At the start of Episode IX, everyone is questioning to each other why Darth Vader saved them. Darth Vader tells everyone he is in charge, everyone obviously follows in fear. The empire is now in control, it belongs to Darth Vader. Finding and killing Obi Wan Kenobi is now his main priority, along with killing any rebels that wish to face the wrath of the empire. Then the hologram of Emperor Palpatine appears while Darth Vader’s back is turned. “Impressive, you managed to defeat me. I didn’t think anyone could do it, but you did.” Darth Vader turns around, “What do I have to do to keep you out of this realm?” He answers: “Business as usual, carry out my orders. If I return this time, there will be no button for you to press to defeat me…” Darth Vader obeys: “Yes, master.” And that could be how it leads into Star Wars Rebels. But hey, this is just an idea.

  15. Who knows if it can’t really happen. Darth Vader could really be alive. At the end of the episode Six, we know Luke Skywalker took Darth Vader to Endor and all we saw at the end of the movie was his suit being burned. Could be possible that he was alive and Luke had him somewhere where No one new because of the Vulnerability of the situation.
