‘Halo 4’ Rakes In Over $220 Million In Only 24 Hours

Video games are certainly making a significant mark in the realms of entertainment, especially when it comes to financial gain.

One of the most anticipated games of 2012 is of course developer 343 Industries and Microsoft’s Halo 4, which was just released recently. In only 24 short hours, the game made over $220 million, on its way to over $300 million in its first week of release.

These immense numbers lead to even more immense numbers. The successful launch has pushed the Halo franchise as a whole past the $3.3 billion mark. And on top of the money being made, over 4 million players were taking part in the game in just the first five days, quickly logging 31.4 million hours of gameplay and pushing the franchise as a whole to over 5 billion hours.

While these numbers are massive and mean huge success for Microsoft, they do not make Halo 4 and the Halo franchise king of the video game mountain. In fact, these numbers are fairly modest in comparison to the Call of Duty franchise, who, as a whole, have been setting and obliterating records year after year after year. Their most recent title (not counting the just released Black Ops II—stay tuned for the sure-to-be large numbers for that one), Modern Warfare 3, hit $400 million in its first 24 hours of release, $775 million in five days, and crossed the $1 billion mark in only sixteen days…one day quicker than Avatar did it.
