Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Being Adapted Into Stage Musical
  |  @   |

Director Guillermo del Toro‘s haunting and beautiful Pan’s Labyrinth is one of the truly great films of the past decade. Now the movie is on its way to a second life, this time as a stage musical.

Del Toro, as if not already insanely busy with other things, has been working on the adaptation for four years now, interviewing and finding the talent to make it happen. He’s also already written the book—or libretto: the narrative structure that keeps a musical from just being a concert with people doing random things on stage, basically—with Jeremy Ungar.

In the four years of interviewing talent, del Toro chose Paul Williams to pen the lyrics for the musical, with Gustavo Santaolalla, who won two Oscars composing the scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel, as well as one of my personal favorite film scores, The Motorcycle Diaries, will write the music.

Pan’s Labyrinth tells the story of a young girl who escapes to a fantasy world to get away from her viciously evil stepfather, a military captain rooting out and eliminating rebels five years after the Spanish Civil War in 1944.
