Rovio Entertainment Announces ‘Angry Birds’ Movie In Development

Angry Birds Image

Rovio Entertainment could not have seen their Angry Birds mobile app game catapult itself into the territory that it is in now. There are Angry Birds shirts, towels, toys, and a few special edition games – Star Wars being the most notable one so far – and now a movie. Yes a movie.

It would have been hard to believe that we’d get to this point when the original game was released a few years back, but it has indeed gotten to it. And now Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce the film, while David Maisel (formerly of Marvel Studios) is on board as an executive producer.

A press release from Rovio announced the plans to move forward with a big screen adaptation of their game. In it, a group of birds (varying in shapes, sizes, and abilities) have their precious eggs stolen by an evil army of green pigs. The story is there, but how far can you stretch a story that involves launching birds into green pigs? I guess whoever is tasked with writing the script will have to figure that out.

Cohen has produced Ice Age, Robots, and Horton Hears a Who for Fox’s Blue Sky Studios. He then jumped ship to Universal’s Illumination Entertainment where he produced Despicable Me and Hop.

I really don’t think it is an absolute necessity that we get an Angry Birds movie. It is a fun game and somewhat addicting, but there is just not enough mythology in it to warrant a full-length movie.

The Angry Birds movie is slated to hit theaters in 2016.
