I’d been told about Cursed Pirate Girl for a long time before I actually picked it up. The thing about the comic that was brought up again and again was the artwork of Jeremy Bastian. It was always explained to me as a style of comic art that was unlike anything on comic shelves.

Finally, after reading Cursed Pirate Girl, Vol. 1 I can confirm that Jeremy Bastian is one of the most gifted artists working in comics. However, art isn’t Cursed Pirate Girl‘s only sticking point. Within the pages of this book is one of the most well-written and thrilling adventure stories of 2012.

Cursed Pirate Girl is searching for her father – the greatest pirate captain of the mythical Omerta Seas. On her quest, Cursed Pirate Girl must travel deep below the ocean’s surface to a world inhabited by wonderful and menacing beasts.

The most incredible aspect of Cursed Pirate Girl’s storyline is simply the world Bastian has built within his comic. Every character and event in this book is carefully planned to deepen the magical world of the comic. Mythical creatures creep from hidden lairs not only to push the plot further, but also to expand this book’s mythology. There is an incredibly deep history that soars and expands with every panel and page. There’s also an incredible amount of thought put into every aspect of the book’s story and it’s incredibly compelling because of it.

Of course, I can’t talk about Cursed Pirate Girl without again mentioning this book’s artwork. Jeremy Bastian is truly a master of detail. Every page of this book is filled with intricate details that burst from every panel. It doesn’t contain the type of traditional comic art you’ll find in a DC or Marvel book. Instead, the artwork of Bastian resembles something similar to a woodblock printing. The comic breaks every boundary of traditional comic art. This book is absolutely beautiful.

Cursed Pirate Girl is worth your time. If you are looking for something that moves and expands beyond traditional comics, this is the book for you. Jeremy Bastian has crafted a new adventure saga for the 21st century that could only be told through his beautiful artwork and dazzling narrative.
