Franco Nero in Django Image

It’s always exciting for fans of western movie genre to see a new movie like Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained being buzzed about, primarily because we just don’t see new western films nearly as often as we would all like to.

Westerns were everywhere back in the day, even sprouting sub-genres like the spaghetti western. The best known spaghetti western was and is Sergio Leone’s Man with No Name trilogy, of course, which starred Clint Eastwood. But there’s many other great spaghetti westerns to enjoy, one of which being the 1966 film Django.

The movie starred Franco Nero, who has a cameo in Django Unchained, and it appears we may not have seen the last of Nero as the iconic character.

Producers Eric Zaldivar and Mike Malloy are developing a Django sequel titled Django Lives!, and are currently seeking to secure the finances necessary to make the movie a reality, as well as the sequel rights. Better yet, the duo have Nero attached and ready to star if they’re able to make the movie.

Over thirty movies were made with the Django name trying to capitalize on the original film, which, at the time, was considered one of the most violent movies ever made. Only one of them was an official sequel also starring Nero, 1987’s Django Strikes Again.

Here’s a basic idea of the plot that Malloy and Zaldivar are planning to use for Django Lives! if they succeed in making it:

The story would have former gunslinger Django, in his twilight years, ending up as a silent-movie consultant in 1915 Hollywood and meeting an aspiring filmmaker with whom he reluctantly goes into business. When the filmmaker gets killed by racketeers, the young man’s gambling debts are considered transferred to Django, who must now flee for safety to a small rural community.

But that town’s sharply divided inhabitants have their own problems, and Django becomes embroiled in a bloody conflict immediately upon arrival.

It’s safe to say that most fans of western flicks are excited by the thought of another Django sequel starring Nero, even at 71 years old, and that this is a movie that needs to happen. Maybe it would be the one to start another western explosion.

What do you think of a possible Django sequel starring Franco Nero?
