Damon Lindelof Won’t Be Writing Script For ‘Prometheus 2’

If you were severely disappointed by how Prometheus turned out, chances are you pointed the blame at Damon Lindelof. The former Lost executive producer had more than just his hand in Jon Spaihts‘s script, he drastically changed everything about it. In the end, Prometheus was not what it had turned out to be and soon it became the most polarizing film of the summer. Perhaps it could have been better handled had director Ridley Scott and the producers realized the quality of product they were given.
Regardless of who is to blame, Lindelof has confirmed that he won’t be returning to write a script for a sequel, also explaining why he made this decision. Check it out below.
In a recent interview with Collider, Lindelof talked about plans for setting some sort of foundation for a sequel if Prometheus ended up being successful. For the most part it was, but I am sure the screenwriter wasn’t prepared for this kind of backlash. But I think Lindelof was just too concerned about making it a “is it a prequel?” kind of film, that he forgot to make it what it is.
Here is his explanation:
Ridley [Scott] and I talked at great length during the story process of the first movie about what subsequent movies would be if Prometheus were to be successful. And I think that the movie ended in a very specific way that hinted at, or strongly implied that there were going to be continuing adventures worthy of writing stories. What those stories would be would not necessarily usurp or transcend the Alien franchise as we saw it because we know that the Nostromo hasn’t come along yet. So the idea was to set up a universe that”¦ Is it a prequel? Okay. If that’s what we want to call it, sure. But the sequel to this movie is not Alien. The sequel to this movie is this other thing.
The latter portion of the statement makes sense. To create a true Prometheus sequel, it would have to be the kind of film that you would have to watch Alien immediately after. No, instead it would just be another link that connects the two franchises together. But after the critical reaction, Lindelof was at a certain stage where he was caught up in writing for other projects that there would not be enough time for him to write for the sequel.

So Ridley and I talked about what that other thing might be, and he was excited about doing it. But then I think what ended up happening was that the movie came out, and there was a reaction to the movie. And I got really wrapped up in [Star Trek Into Darkness] and really wrapped up in this movie that I’m producing and writing with Brad Bird. And I have a TV project that I was really passionate about. Ridley and I had a meeting after Prometheus came out where we started talking again about where this journey would go. And in that meeting I said to him, unfortunately, before he could ask me and go through the discomfort of whether he was going to ask me or not”¦ It’s sort of like having a date where you’re letting the other person know, ‘I’m in another relationship.’ So I can’t tell you that he asked me and I said no. But I did communicate to him that I was working on these other things.
Had things gone differently for Lindelof, I’m sure the tone of the statement would have been slightly different. But looking at how much he was and is working on now, it’s understandable why he would not want to write a Prometheus sequel.

I loved PROMETHEUS. No, it’s not a perfect movie but I cannot understand why some people hated it with such passion. If you watch the original ALIEN there are similar inconsistencies in the script (for example, how a seasoned crew of space travelers would handle an alien life form). And, with the exception of the first two films (ALIEN and ALIENS), PROMETHEUS was many times superior to every other movie in the ALIEN franchise. I think the haters of PROMETHEUS clearly had expectations that were unrealistically high, and when the movie wasn’t exactly what they were expecting all they could do is spew hate and venom about it. With that said, I would love to read John Spaihts’ original script to see how much Lindeloff changed it. I just hope that the next PROMETHEUS movie is as much fun as PROMETHEUS was.

This is a ridiculous statement. What about all those other crap ALIEN sequels and the ALIENS VS. PREDATOR movies? Those movies are far more of a blight on the “ALIENS franchise” than PROMETHEUS, yet there is so much hate for Lindeloff and PROMETHEUS. Makes no sense. If anything, PROMETHEUS has breathed new life into the franchise and, on it’s own, is one of the most exciting and intriguing big-budget Sci-Fi films we’ve seen in a long time.

I just don’t get why there’s so much hate? Loved the movie and I think Lindelof is a great writer. Just my opinion.
