Watch This Clip From Pixar’s Photorealistic Animated Short ‘The Blue Umbrella’
  |  @   |

Pixar’s animated shorts are nothing short of splendid whimsical fun for everyone. But underneath all of that is a creative team hoping to make their dreams come true and make it big. These animated shorts showcase a lot of directing and animating talents. Like all of the Pixar features before them, Monsters University will have a short of its own that will lead into the big feature. The short is called The Blue Umbrella and it comes from technical artist Saschka Unseld.

Well we have a short clip here below short courtesy of the people over at the Wall Street Journal. Check it out.

In The Blue Umbrella, it looks like the Pixar team is experimenting with photorealistic technology, which begs the question, what exactly do the people have in store for us if Blue Umbrella looks this good. At first I thought I was looking at a live-action clip. The rain and texture of the umbrellas look all too real to be animation.

The animation studio seems to be going through a variation of animation experiments and are effectively using these shorts to convey their progress/success. Looking at how La Luna and Night and Day turned out, I can’t wait to see what other innovative animation techniques they are using.

Here’s Pixar’s plot description:

It is just another evening commute until the rain starts to fall, and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters. And in the midst, two umbrellas””one blue, one not””fall eternally in love.
