David Bowie’s Birthday Gift To Himself AND His Fans: A New Album, His First In 10 Years!
  |

On the heels of our birthday tribute to David Bowie comes the most extraordinary and rather unexpected news: He has gone back into the recording studio and will be releasing this March his first new album of all original material in ten years.

The album, entitled The Next Day and being released through Iso/Columbia Records, has already gotten a single and a video for the song “Where Are We Now?” The video can be viewed here below; the single can be purchased exclusively through iTunes (album, single) starting today, and will see a wide release in March.

This marks Bowie’s 30th album, and it comes like a bat out of hell, totally from left field, and how touching and piquant that it’s all done on the man’s birthday.

Here’s an excerpt about the new album and single, via Bowie’s official website.

Produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti, ‘Where Are We Now?’ was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York. The single is accompanied by a haunting video directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to David’s time in Berlin. He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time and a lyric constantly raising the question Where Are We Now?

“The moment you know, you know you know” resonates from the new single’s lyric. Now we all know…David Bowie has been in the recording studio…just when we least expected it!!”

Having Tony Visconti adds just the right touch and although Bowie is in his autumn years (golden years?), he’s still in his element wholeheartedly. The single has just the right mixture of the ambience, spacey vibes, and aural shadows and light. A pained piano passage plays over drum notes that land like heavy feathers and Bowie sings in a voice filled with fragility and candor, yet with his usual strong pitch and sly attitude. He presses all the right buttons and hits all the right targets, and the video is the kind of surreal, freaky, artsy visual stamp of approval that has followed the Bowie legend, the man and the artist for decades now. So it’s a double celebration today, to the man, who turns a youthful 66 years old and for the buoyancy of the release of a brand new Bowie product. Rejoice and have a listen!
