The GoD List: Comics For January 9, 2012
  |  @   |

Each and every week “Let’s Go” Henchman21 AND “Red Wings” MK2Fac3 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, they looks forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and they’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of January 9, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Well, it’s been a nice couple weeks’ vacation with the holidays and all but it’s back to business. And business is good. Except for the fact that there aren’t really all that many books I feel like talking about this week. Sure there’s the last issue of Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth, a new issue of The Legend of Luther Strode, and plenty more. But this week is dominated by two big titles, which we will get to shortly. So let’s start this new year off with this week’s GoD List!

Henchman21

Issues:

Star Wars #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $2.99) Is it any surprise that this is the first book I’m talking about this week? Set between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, this is classic Star Wars as so many have been looking for. As Dark Horse says, “This is Star Wars as you remember it . . . and as you have never seen it before!” Everyone you want to see is here, all the action you want is here. If you complain about the prequels, it’s time to put up or shut up and buy this comic. Sure, there have been plenty of great Star Wars comics over the years, but this series just feels a little special. And all this specialness is brought to us by writer Brian Wood. Wood knows what he’s doing when it comes to characters, and it has always been the characters that make Star Wars so special. Wood has already tackled one licensed property in Conan the Barbarian, so I’m not worried about him adapting someone else’s characters and setting. He’s also a writer entering an exciting portion of his career, and this is just another project that has me excited. I’ve got high hopes for this series, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

Superior Spider-Man #1 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) I’m entering into this issue with a bit of trepidation. I’ve generally enjoyed the Dan Slott run on Spider-Man since he took over as sole writer of the series. There have been some ups and downs but like I said, for the most part it has been enjoyable. Warning, I’m about to get into some massive spoilers if you haven’t read Amazing Spider-Man #700 so avert your eyes if you haven’t read it yet. We good? Okay, so in ASM #700 and in the issues leading up to it, Doctor Octopus switched brains with Peter Parker, and in the end, Peter was not able to reverse the whole dealie, so the current Spider-Man is an amalgam (aren’t the words you learn from comics great?) of Doc Ock and Peter. I was let down by the ending, just because I found the whole “Doc Ock wins but he’s kind of been taken over by Peter so I guess he’s going to be a good guy for some reason” – thing to be more than a little confusing. I guess that is what we’ll be exploring in this series, but I just don’t know how to process all this. I’m giving the series a shot because I know that this is just a temporary change and it could be ground for an interesting story. The other thing the series has going for it is the art by Ryan Stegman. Stegman has been turning in great work over on Scarlet Spider, and now it’s time for him to hit the main stage. I think this will be something that just has to be a shot. It’s a bold change, and I don’t think it will be a permanent change, but what does that matter? It doesn’t have to be a permanent change to be a good story.
