GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Ready Player One” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, I look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of my pull list, grab some comics, and I’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of January 30, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It’s another great week for comics, as we’ve got a big anniversary issue for one of the best series on the stands and a look at a great Kickstarter effort that you should get in on. There’s plenty here, so let’s cut to the chase and get into this week’s GoD List!

Issues:

Invincible 100

Invincible #100 (Image Comics – $3.99) Wow, 100 issues of the little superhero comic that could. It’s always great to see creator-owned series last a long time, and Invincible has placed itself into a certain upper echelon of the all-time great comic series. Every month, Invincible just does its thing, telling well-crafted character-based action. Writer Robert Kirkman has created a cast of characters that readers have come to know and love and have followed them through a hundred issues of changes. One of the great things that Kirkman is able to do with Invincible is anything he wants. There’s no one telling Kirkman that he can’t replace his main character, or have Earth invaded by aliens, or whatever other crazy idea comes into his head. Just look at the name of the current storyline: “The Death of Everyone.” I’m reading Invincible in trade, so I don’t exactly what’s going on right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone really did die and issue #101 featured a whole new cast. So, a tip of the hat to messieurs Kirkman and Ryan Ottley and the rest of the crew on 100 great issues and here’s to 100 more.

MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet #4 (of 5) (Image Comics – $3.50) This is your monthly reminder to buy MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet. If you buy it, good things will happen to you. The good thing will be that you get to read an awesome comic. I can’t make miracles here.

Kickstarter Special:

Earthward by Bryan Q. Miller and Marcio Takara If you’re one of those people who complain that there aren’t enough all-ages comics on the comics stands, it’s time to put up or shut up. Writer Bryan Q. Miller and artist Marcio Takara present you with Earthward, the story of a group of kids who have to search for their parents after they go missing out in the depths of space. Described as “Goonies in Space,” Earthward mixes a wide variety of influences to tell a story sure to be filled with equal parts excitement and whimsy. You can see examples of Takara’s work on the Kickstarter page, and he seems to be well suited for the story. There’s plenty of time remaining to add your money to make this project happen and there are plenty of cool rewards to be had. Make sure you check this one out.

Trades:

Global Frequency (Vertigo Comics – $19.99) We all know that Warren Ellis is a fantastic comic writer, but unfortunately he just isn’t writing as many comics these days, which is why you should pick up this new edition of Global Frequency. Global Frequency originally came out between 2002 and 2004 and is long considered one of Ellis’ best works. The series follows a covert group of specialized operatives that are called in to deal with specific problems. Each issue stands on its own and features work by an amazing and diverse group of artists. You’ve got work from Steve Dillon, Gene Ha, Simon Bisley, Lee Bermejo, David Lloyd, and many more. The two old trades have been out of print for a while, so if you missed out on this one in the past, don’t make the same mistake this time.
