‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director Jon Chu To Adapt ‘Matched’ For Disney

Back in September we reported that Disney was planning to adapt Ally Condie‘s Matched, a young adult novel whose characters live in a dystopian world where a group called The Society makes every single decision for its people. At first David Slade was tapped to direct Matched, but according to THR, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu has now been hired to direct the film.

Chu is building quite the resume, having already helmed a few musically themed projects, including the Justin Bieber doc Never Say Never and his first action film G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is due out in theaters this March. THR reports that even though Chu is going to direct Matched, this will not impede on his duties over at Sony, where he is directing a reboot of Masters of the Universe. However, the lack of developments with the project may give way to Matched being Chu’s next directorial effort.

Matched is the first in a trilogy of novels written by Condie. In the novel, every decision that a person makes is made by the Society, but one young girl named Cassia experiences visions of a boy who is not chosen by them. She is told that these visions are nothing more than a glitch, but she refuses to accept that answer and is forced to find out the truth on her own. Of course dire consequences come of such actions, which would spill over into the next two novels.

Basically if Matched does well at the box office, we could see three more of these films – because studios now like to split the final novel into two parts.
