John Barrowman In Talks To Return As Captain Jack Harkness For ‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary
  |

For as long as the time John Barrowman first arrived in Doctor Who, he’s gathered an incredible cult following as the charismatic omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness. Having been in several episodes of modern Doctor Who as a companion and an ally, and remaining one of the main characters of spin-off Torchwood, many fans have questioned whether he would be returning for this year’s 50th Anniversary special.

The answer, right now, at the time of writing is: maybe. Well, better than maybe. In reality, it’s a good chance that he will be involved. Speaking in an interview on UK television show This Morning, Barrowman spilled the beans that he is now in discussions for appearing in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary.

I haven’t had any information until just about right now. All I can say to you is that we’re discussing things. That’s a total exclusive! You guys are the first to ever hear, because even yesterday I was giving interviews and I was saying I have heard nothing”¦ and now I can give you a little bit of an exclusive that I’d heard something.

Speaking frankly, as a long-term Whovian, if Barrowman is willing to spill that much info at this point, then it’s pretty much going to happen I would think. Due to the popularity of his character, he’s been asked non-stop for years whether he would make a return to Doctor Who, and always pronouncing that he hadn’t heard anything but was hopeful.

The word is that showrunner Steven Moffat wanted Barrowman back for the Series 6 episode, “A Good Man Goes To War,” but Captain Jack couldn’t appear because of scheduling clashes with the filming of sister show Torchwood: Miracle Day in the United States. Moffat has made it clear that he’d love to bring back the character at some point; in fact, he was responsible for the creation of the character in 2005 with “The Empty Child.”

If he appears, this will mark the first time Barrowman’s character interacts with Matt Smith‘s manifestation of the Doctor, which might make for some interesting interactions between the two.

The full interview on This Morning covers quite a lot of ground for Barrowman, and includes discussions on his ongoing book series with his sister, recent cameo appearances, and his ongoing role in the television series Arrow. The video is embedded below – and the Doctor Who snippet is around the 6:00 mark.

Doctor Who continues on television on March 30, 2013, with the continuation of Series 7. The premiere episode is entitled “The Bells of St. John” and will feature the reunion of Matt Smith with new companion Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. The 50th Anniversary specials associated with Doctor Who are believed to be airing in November 2013.

  3. He’s involved because one of the children he gave to the aliens was non other than the future Dr Who. This is why Jack seems to appear when Dr Who needs him. He never really explains why he can’t die or does he.
