Much Ado About Nothing

The production for Joss Whedon‘s take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing may not have been as publicized as The Avengers, but the anticipation for the film’s release is all the same. The project virtually went unnoticed mostly because the project itself was a secret and principle photography was completed in less than a month. But just because it was a speedy shoot, doesn’t mean that the quality of the film was sacrificed. Shot in entirely black and white, Whedon’s latest directorial effort is a modern day spin on the classic Shakespeare tale that follows two unlikely lovers falling for each other.

Now we’ve got the first trailer for the film from Lionsgate. Hit the jump to see more.

Those familiar with the Whedonverse will almost immediately recognize that Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Clark Gregg, Nathan Fillon, Sean Maher, and Fran Kranz have roles in the film.

In the film Claudio (Kranz) Hero (Jillian Morgese) speak highly of love and have fallen for each other’s affections. In contrast, Benedick (Densiof) and Beatrice (Acker) publicly scorn the emotion and each other, but at the same time are perfect for each other. The premise may be played out, but this is Shakespeare people, he wrote the book – or play to be more precise – on romance, comedy, and tragedy. Then you’ve got the fact that Whedon is directing this piece.

The film debuted over at the Toronto International Film Festival last review and received high praise and has earned an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lionsgate will release Much Ado About Nothing into theaters on June 7, 2013.

Here’s the synopsis:

Leonato (Clark Gregg), the governor of Messina, is visited by his friend Don Pedro (Reed Diamond) who is returning from a victorious campaign against his rebellious brother Don John (Sean Maher). Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Claudio (Fran Kranz). While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero (Jillian Morgese), while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice (Amy Acker), the governor’s niece. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange with Leonato for a marriage.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, Don Pedro, with the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero, attempts to sport with Benedick and Beatrice in an effort to trick the two into falling in love. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, with the help of his allies: Conrade (Riki Lindhome) and Borachio (Spencer Treat Clark), plots against the happy couple, using his own form of trickery to try to destroy the marriage before it begins.

A series of comic and tragic events continue to keep the two couples from truly finding happiness, but then again perhaps love may prevail.
