Victor Crowley Returns With A Bloody Vengeance In The First ‘Hatchet III’ Trailer
  |

The latest in a low-budget slasher franchise that kicked off with a bang over six years ago and whose first sequel encountered controversy during its brief, unrated theatrical run, Hatchet III is about to unleash some more gruesome carnage and sick fun this summer. MPI/Dark Sky Films have announced the movie’s release date and unveiled its first teaser trailer.

You can watch the trailer here below.

Hatchet III, which marks the directorial debut of BJ McDonnell (a camera operator on the first two movies as well as last summer’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), was filmed in Louisiana in May and June of 2012. Back for the third installment are Danielle Harris as the series’ resilient heroine Marybeth and slasher icon Kane Hodder as the monstrous backwoods psychopath Victor Crowley. Joining the cast for this latest bout of gory mayhem are Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Derek Mears (the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast), and Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs), among others. Original writer and director Adam Green wrote the screenplay and executive produced.

Plot is a moot point in these movies, but Hatchet III finds Marybeth seeking to put an end to the voodoo curse that keeps Crowley coming back time and again to slaughter, while a search and recovery team heads into Crowley’s home killing ground of Honey Island Swamp to mop up the mess left behind by the first two movies. Chances are that ol’ Vic is there waiting for them, waiting to rip them all with either his bare hands or whatever sharp implement he can get his slimy mitts on.

I’ve only seen the first Hatchet, but I thought it was a ton of brainless, gory fun. There’s a copy of the Hatchet II DVD sitting on a shelf (given to me as a Christmas present by the awesome people who run Geeks of Doom) that I still need to watch, but that sequel has gotten a decidedly mixed reaction from my horror fanatic friends. Hatchet III looks like more of the same. But if McDonnell can pull this one off with the same frenzied fanboy chutzpah Green brought to the first two movies, this could be another killer time at the movies. We will see.

Hatchet III opens in New York City and Los Angeles on June 14, 2013. Members of the cast and crew will attend screenings and participate in Q&A’s afterwards. Additional cities will be announced at a later date.
