Watch Now: First Trailers For James Mangold’s ‘The Wolverine’
  |  @   |

Earlier this week, we saw 6 seconds of director James Mangold‘s The Wolverine. Today, Twentieth Century Fox has unveiled the first official trailers (domestic and international) for the upcoming film.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, The Wolverine finds Logan (Hugh Jackman) traveling to Japan to start a new life after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand (the third X-Men film). In Japan, he encounters the enigmatic Silver Samurai, played by Will Yun Lee, as well as Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova) and Yukio (Rila Fukushima).

Here below, check out both the International and Domestic trailers, which feature a few different bits of dialogue amidst the action.

“What they did to me, what I am, can’t be undone.” I wonder if Wolverine is referring to the cinematic travesty that was 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Personally, I’m not that excited for this film – and these trailers do little to stir up any interest in Logan’s latest adventure. While Mangold’s film doesn’t look half as bad as Gavin Hood’s massive misstep, The Wolverine trailer lacks the shock-and-awe factor needed to wipe my memory (with an adamantium bullet, perhaps?) of how far this character has fallen.

Wolverine gets into a bar fight! Oh look, Logan is undergoing a genetic experiment! There’s Wolverine in his signature white tank top! Oh, now Logan is shirtless and brooding over a lost love! We’ve seen this stuff a million times. The cherry on top is an action sequence involving Wolverine on top of a high-speed bullet train fighting anonymous thugs in black suits. Really? The Matrix Reloaded called, it wants its mediocrity (and its green screens) back.

I don’t want to judge the entirety of Mangold’s effort based on a two-and-a-half-minute sizzle reel of clips out of context, but my first impressions are disappointed and uninterested. The Wolverine should be Marvel’s The Dark Knight – but after this trailer I’m convinced the bar has been lowered considerably to make this movie another empty, computer-generated spectacle.

Twentieth Century Fox is releasing James Mangold’s The Wolverine in theaters everywhere this summer on July 26th.
