The trailer for 2 Guns has popped up on the internet and I have it in my sights. The film is directed by Icelander Baltasar Kormákur with a screenplay by Blake Masters. The movie 2 Guns is based off the BOOM! Studios graphic novel of the same name.
Drop below the jump to find out what I thought of Academy Award winner Denzel Washington(Man on Fire, Training Day) and Mark Wahlberg(The Departed, Three Kings) teaming up to be the latest buddy cop movie on the block.
What I Learned:
Denzel is a man of many hats. One minute he’s making cop/donut jokes outside of a bank. The next minute he’s robbing that bank while wearing a Dark Knight Joker-inspired mask with his new best buddy, Mark Wahlberg. The next, next minute there’s a double cross and we learn they’re both cops (trailer spoiler alert) and Denzel’s sporting his third rather stylish hat in the two minutes the trailer has been running.
Hey geeks, it’s Edward, ‘so say we all,’ Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica 2004)!
Hey action movie lovers, it’s Bill, ‘game over, man,’ Paxton(Aliens)!
And, oh yeah, there’s the sexy lady, Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), who manages to get caught and inspire our heroes to blow up a car full of money.
You know, your basic action-crime-drama summer movie.
Why I’ll Watch:
I must admit that the longer I watched this trailer, the more I was ready for this hyper-kinetic action-crime-drama summer movie starring Denzel Washington to happen. Let’s face it. Washington is the main draw in this summer heist. The man enhances every movie he dares grace with his presence. And I want to watch in spite of the trailer going overboard in the sell department. I mean, seriously guys, you had me at the twist and the huge gobs of cash being stolen. Topless ladies in seedy motel rooms, big guns flailing everywhere, helicopters falling from the sky, and cars full of money exploding is just overkill by that point. Save up a little something for the next trailer.
In researching the trailer for 2 Guns I was surprised to learn that this new summer movie was a BOOM! Studios comic first. The book was written by Steven Grant. Sadly, I am unfamiliar with Grant’s work. But the coming movie has piqued my interest. I may have to buy a copy of 2 Guns in order to compare and contrast later.
