Watch 6 Minutes Of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ Event

On Sunday, March 24, 2013, Peter Jackson hosted an exclusive live online event to premiere new footage from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – the second film in his trilogy inspired by the classic J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novel – and answer questions from viewers and a selection of special surprise guests. This event was open only to those who had purchased The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Blu-ray and received a unique passcode to access the live feed.

Today, Jackson has released a 6-minute edited excerpt of the event on his YouTube channel. You can watch the video here below.

Jackson fields several prerecorded questions from fans (including a few celebrity ones), displays production art, and shows some behind-the-scenes footage featuring characters both new (Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel) and old (welcome back, Legolas). It’s not the most exciting video in the world, but I did enjoy Jackson’s rebuttal to Stephen Colbert‘s extremely specific question regarding the director’s take on Tolkien’s lore. Really makes you wonder about just how sanitary those Colbert Report coffee cups are.

The only thing missing from this video is the exclusive Desolation of Smaug scene — which saw Gandalf and Radagast investigating the origins of the Morgul blade — that premiered during the live event. Perhaps that will get its own roll out in the near future. Jackson has hinted at a first trailer for the second movie debuting before Man of Steel this Summer.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters on December 13, 2013.
