‘City Of Bones’ Trailer: Buffy Meets Bleach With A Dash Of Twilight
  |  @   |

A new trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones has appeared before us internet mundanes and aims to slice its way into our hearts. City of Bones is based off the New York Times best-selling young adult urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments written by Cassandra Clare. The movie is directed by Norwegian film director Harald Zwart. He is the director responsible for such films as Agent Cody Banks and the 2010 The Karate Kid remake.

The film is set to hit theaters on August 23, 2013. Slip below the jump and give the trailer a watch. Then move your eyes slightly upwards and read what I thought of the second trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

What I Learned:
Your world is not what you think it is young Buffy Summers Ichigo Kurosaki heroine of City of Bones, Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror). For one thing your trailer life is being narrated by accomplished British actor and latest movie Moriarty, Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows). For another, hooded, tattooed angry goths and your cup of coffee are telling you that you’re special, that demons are real, and that you are part of the society that hunts them. Trust the British accents, that tasty looking cappuccino, and CCH Pounder to guide you, young miss, and you will survive the City of Bones.

Why I Would Watch:
Lena Headey is in this flick. She’s Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones). She’s the slo-mo drug kingpin of a 200-story flat in Dredd. She’s John Conner’s mother (Sarah Conner Chronicles). SHE. IS. SPARTA! (300). In case you didn’t notice, I think Lena Headey is pretty great.

There’s a female action hero as a lead. We need more demon fighting, swashbuckling leading ladies in the movies. Katniss Everdeen can’t do it all by herself.

Plus, there’s the demon-fighting aspect. I’d be a hypocrite if I said that I don’t like a good secret society of demon slayers fantasy flick.

Why I Wouldn’t Watch:
Now before you get huffy, internet, and say that I’m unfairly judging a movie before seeing it, well, yes, I am. Trailers are meant to entice you with what they think you want to see in order to get you into that theater seat drinking overpriced sugary drinks and eating inappropriate starches. Unfortunately, I’m not seeing much in this trailer that would draw me into the story. The themes run deep into the “well traveled” zone and the Rule of Cool is nowhere near being invoked as far as I am concerned.

I know City of Bones is based of a series of popular young adult books called The Mortal Instruments. I could practically smell ‘mega franchise opportunity’ wafting off the trailer. If you are a fan of the Cassandra Clare books, I hope that City of Bones is everything you want and more. But if the trailer is any indication of what is to come, I don’t see much promise in the film .

But that’s just my opinion. Tell me why I’m wrong in the comments.

When’s it coming?
