MAJOR SPOILER: ‘Iron Man 3’ Post-Credits Cameo Possibly Revealed

BAADASSSSS!   |

Iron Man 3 Header

Part of the fun of following the developing of each Marvel Studios movie is wondering what amazing surprises would go into their now customary post-credits scene. The first Iron Man paved the way with Samuel L. Jackson’s appearance as Nick Fury to recruit Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in “the Avenger Initiative” at the very end, while The Avengers simultaneously closed out Phase One and kicked Phase Two into high gear with the revelation that the cosmic evil pulling the strings the whole time was none other than Thanos, one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful and fearsome villains. That last scene was inserted into the middle of the end credits, so if you stuck around until its final seconds you got to see the Avengers themselves chowing down on a shawarma dinner – a scene filmed only days before the movie’s theatrical debut.

Iron Man 3 held its premiere over the weekend in Paris and according to a source at Latino Review, the Shane Black-directed sequel continues Marvel’s proud tradition of closing their films out in surprising fashion.

The spy describes the post-credits scene as such…

It starts with a close shot of Tony Stark on a couch talking about his various traumas, obviously he’s talking to someone, as if he was seeing a shrink, the tone of the scene is light and supposedly funny. Then we discover that the person he’s talking to is Bruce Banner/Mark Ruffalo, who fell asleep because of Tony’s boring story. Tony remarks that Banner has been sleeping during the most part of his story and yells at him, and Banner just mumbles and says “You know, I’m not that kind of doctor!” Then Tony recalls another memory and resumes his monologue, and then we see Banner starting to fall asleep again.

Late last year, an interesting rumor began circulating that the secret Iron Man 3 scene would have ol’ Shellhead soaring through the stars in his Mark 39 sub-orbital armor code-named “Gemini” and possibly running afoul of the Guardians of the Galaxy, set to make their motion picture debut the following summer. This scene, or something even more spectacular and guaranteed to keep the fans buzzing until Marvel’s next movie, could still appear in Iron Man 3 when it is officially released in theaters next month. The scene described above could be a tactic for the studio to quash further speculation for now. The Nick Fury scene in the first Iron Man was left out of the cut that was screened at its premiere, but was included in the version that played theaters around the world.

However, if this is the scene that we can expect to find after the end credits have concluded on Iron Man 3, you can count on me to stay and watch. Mark Ruffalo‘s performance and the chemistry he had with Downey was one of the undisputed highlights of last summer’s The Avengers. Seeing as how we still have another two years to go before they team up again for The Avengers 2, a brief interlude where Ruffalo and Downey get to banter will be worth its weight in vibranium. But if we get that other scene, I’d be just fine with that, too.

Iron Man 3 opens on May 3, 2013.
