It’s been pure madness since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and revealed plans to make Episode VII, a storm of announcements and rumors and suggestions and debates we’ve all been working our way through. One of the things we’ve heard whispered was that Disney might be planning to eventually release a new Star Wars movie every year, though nothing was confirmed.
If the thought of a new movie every year seemed like overkill to you, prepare yourselves, as this particular whisper doesn’t appear to be going away. Speaking at CinemaCon, Disney made their intentions known. According to the company, they plan to start releasing a new Star Wars movie every year beginning in 2015 with Episode VII.
The goal is to alternate between the primary numbered movies and the spinoff movies we’ve heard about, which could focus on everything from well known characters from previous movies to new characters and stories.
While a movie every year could feel like a rushed money-grab strategy, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Sure, a juggernaut like Disney could be focusing primarily on making money, and that would be bad for we the moviegoing audience. But the first movie is still two years away, and we know that multiple movies are already being discussed and developed. If they set things up properly, they could consistently have new talent developing and working on a wide variety of Star Wars movies years before they’re actually released, effectively creating a well-oiled machine that produces one new feature per year.
If this is the case, we could get quality AND quantity. A rare feat. Or we could just get robbed blind. The one thing Disney has going for it is that they know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that people are going to dump money on them whenever they release a new movie…one way or the other.
So we ask you the fans, do you think Disney can put out a new Star Wars movie every year and still realistically deliver a solid product? Or is the ambitious plan destined to lead only to an angry mob?
