It’s been just about nine years (ugh!) since the Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller comedy Dodgeball was released in theaters. A sequel has been mentioned here and there—much like another Stiller project, the Zoolander sequel—for a while now, with no real movement.
Now comes word that a writer has been hired for the sequel, which will again be made by Stiller’s Red Hour Films and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It’s being reported that Clay Tarver has been hired for for the gig.
Details are scarce, though the sequel will apparently see Vince Vaughn’s character forced to team up with Stiller’s character to face a greater threat.
Tarver co-wrote the 2001 thriller Joy Ride with J.J. Abrams—his only listed feature writing credit. But it appears that he’s been much busier as of late. He’s working on a movie titled Quantum Hoops about a nerdy basketball team for Disney that’s also through Stiller’s Red Hour Films; another movie for Disney titled Men Making Music set in the world of competitive barber shop quartets being produced by Abrams; a hunting satire for HBO Films called Meat in the Freezer with Mike Judge; and he wrote the pilot for a Jack Black-produced Showtime comedy titled The Deep Cuts.
No word yet on a timetable for the Dodgeball sequel or who will be returning apart from Vaughn and Stiller.
